UNCC Leading Community Protection in Times of Heightened Vulnerability

In refugee settings where exploitation rises sharply and vulnerability is high due to lack of essential services, UNCC continues to stand as a frontline advocate for protection and dignity. As a non‑funded community‑driven charity, UNCC is actively raising awareness, sharing vital information, and guiding girls, boys, and seniors toward safety, resilience, and informed decision‑making.

Across the settlements, UNCC volunteers are promoting the Yoga for Protection initiative and leading open discussions that address risks, highlight community strengths, and reinforce moral and social values. Seniors, with their experience and wisdom, play a key role in mentoring the younger generation, while youth learn to recognize danger, protect themselves, and build positive character.

In the urgency of now, UNCC is bringing communities together—pointing out harmful practices, promoting what is good, and strengthening collective responsibility to safeguard every vulnerable person.

UNCC volunteers reached severely affected communities in refugee settlements where lack of funding has led to school dropout, increasing crime, and rising child labour. UNCC intervened to register senior‑care families for non‑food items including sanitary pads for girls living with elderly caregivers, soap, and educational guidance. Volunteers also delivered Psychological First Aid and distributed essential drinks and nutrition support to help families cope.

In 2025, extreme food shortages devastated refugee camps across Uganda. UNCC activated its response plan to support elderly refugees without caregivers, persons living with HIV, chronically ill individuals, and orphans under the care of seniors. Volunteers provided urgent support, essential items, and compassionate care through trusted local partners.

UNCC acknowledges the growing concerns of corruption affecting refugees—whether through individuals, community leaders, organisational staff, or government departments. These practices harm the most vulnerable and undermine the dignity and safety of the people we serve.

The founding member of UNCC, now living in exile after courageously challenging corruption during his time as a refugee in Kenya, continues to inspire the organisation’s commitment to truth, accountability, and justice. His experience exposed how some actors exploited refugees, assuming they had no voice or value. UNCC rejects this narrative completely.

Today, UNCC is actively ensuring that no refugee is left uninformed about their rights, the laws that protect them, and the boundaries and responsibilities that guide life within refugee settlements. Awareness, education, and transparency are at the core of our work.

As part of this commitment, UNCC is partnering with UNHCR to elevate refugee voices, strengthen protection systems, and ensure that concerns about exploitation or misconduct are heard, documented, and addressed appropriately.
